Blog Post #5 Part 2

While taking EDM310, I had no clue what a PLN was. While learning about what a PLN was, I figured that it was going to be very useful to me oneday. While in this class Dr. Strange assigns us to our C4K or C4T every week, I try to follow the teachers on Twitter. I also follow some of the staff of EDM310. These people will help my PLN. I really like having my PLN, because it helps me have good connections with others that are interested in the same things that I am. I am thankful that I was taught about PLN's and how to start one.

CFT Summary

In my frist blog post on Melting Rates was very interesting. It showed how the ice would melt on different materials. It also made the one that meled quicker to be colder not warmer like the warmer block. It was very interesting and I know that the students will enjoy it.

The next blog post I picked was aSportplan Trial. This app will really help you create better workout plans. This was a differnt way to get the student to work out. It gave the students a differnt way to add sketches and drills.

Blog Post #14

In Joel Kleins article,Teaching Our Children Can Be A Profession, he thought professionalizing teaching needed to be changed. The things he saw was not having good enough academic training for prospective teachers, how teachers got awarded, and how seniority was a distraction in schools.

He talked about we needed better academic training for prospective teachers. He thought the teachers's should have better teacher programs. I agree with this, because teachers do need the better programs that can teach them how to do their job at the best of their ability. The next thing he said was that we need a better approach to recruiting teachers. He thought that not to letting everyone that graduated with an education degree become a teacher. Rather then, only let top third education graduates become teachers. I don't agree with this. I believe everyone learns at thier own pace and cold be great teacher's at some point.

The next thing he had a problem with was the way teachers are rewarded. He thought you should reward teachers on their performance and not their seniority. I think this would work better.I think teachers need to be rewarded when they are doing a great job. I feel this will make teacher's want to teach better and have there clas more motivated to learn if they feedl they can benifit from it.

The next thing he had a problem with was how seniority created a distraction in schools. He thought you should get rid of the teacher's that were not getting the job done right besides getting rid of the new teachers. I agree with this to a point. Teachers who are not doing their job the way they should be, should be let go. It shouldn't matter how long they have been teaching.

Students learning

In this week blog post we were asked to create our own blog post. I find that difficult for me to do, yet I will give it a try. I undestand that we need technology in classroooms. I also understand that it helps student's learn more and they can find so much more information. In What is Successful Technology Intergration it states how to integrate technology into classrooms. It also states why you would want to do it and how to do. I feel that it will be hard to do this in centain area's where you do not have enough technology for all the student's. I do feel that the classroom would have to be more teacher-centric because of lask of technology. I know technology is a great tool to be used in classrooms but , my questions would be how to get all students's on a level to get where they could use technology.

In Enhancing Student Learning with Technology it states that "We must not use technology just because it is available. We must use when and only when we can see how it will enable us to do the education job better" Herbert A. Simon, Carnegie Mellon University. With this being said I don't feel like we can only use technology. It has to be other ways to get through to the children to help them learn. All shcools and parents don't have access to the internet. So with that being said I feel that some things will have to be done different because of these facts.

CFK Summary for October

The first comment I made was on Tequairy's blog Fish-ish. This was very interesting because it was a picture. But, the picture was thought to remind her of her grandmother. I really thought she liked that it made her think of her grandmother.

The second comment I left was by TheGreatPJ and was called Blogging Challenge #2. This was very creative because he thought that he should get to pick all his classes. He didn't want to go to school and have to take common core courses. He felt that he should be able to take the coures he wanted to take. He had really great thoughts wanted school to start at different times. He wanted to be able to take summer break in winterinstead of the sumer. I really thought he put some thought into the process. It was a great blog post.

The third comment I made was by Hollie and was called What I Think Will Happen to the Fourteenth Gold Fish . In this one she gave great insight to what to she thought might happen. I really enjoyed what you she had to say. It was very interesting what she thought would happen.

The fourth comment I made was by Night and was called Finding Pounamu. This was very interesting yet simple. He asked question and put the answer next to them. I really didn't understand where he wasgoing with this, but it did give some insight. I think he was just answering questions atthe end of a short story.

Blog Post #11

We were assigned six different videos to watch, and then asked a good question. We were asked us, "What can we learn about teaching from these teachers?" All these teachers used Project Based Learning.

The first video was Back To The Future, done by Brian Crosby at Agnes Risley Elementary school in Sparks, Nevada. This schools class was able for every student to have a laptop. Mr. Crosby used these very well in his classroom. he really engages the students in their learning process. He did an great project where students had a huge balloon and they attached a video camera to it and sent it up into the air. They watched this balloon go up inthe air on a computer. then they blogged about it in their blogs.

The second video was Blended Learning Cycle by Paul Anderson. I learned that there are five E's. They are engage, explore, expand, explain, and evaluate. He uses these five E's to get his class interestied about what they are learning. I also learned about the acronym QUIVERS. "QU" stands for question, "I" stands for investigate/inquiry, "V" stands for video, "E" stands for elaboration, "R" stands for review, and "S" stands for summary quiz. He uses this in his class on a daily bases. This gets his class thinking about what he is going to teach about. He always has a video of himself talking about the subject, this gives him time to get some time with his students. He then goes over the subject, and reviews with his students. Then he gives his students a summary quiz on the subject.

The third video was Making Thinking Visible by Mark Church. This video the teacher was getting his students to work in groups. He asked them as a group to come up with a headline about a puzzle that they were working on. I saw that students need to discuss and interact with others with what they know. They will look back at this at the end of the year and see how their thoughts have changed.

The fourth video was Building Comics by Same Pane. Mr. Pane was teaching his students how to be safe, responsible, and respectful online. He allowed his students to build a comic using a special program on their laptops. I saw that the students made their narrative about them, and it made it more meaningful to them. When they were done the students were able to look at the other students comics as well.

The fifth video was Project Based Learning by Dean Shareski. I learned so much from him. He showed me that PBL makes students understanding about the subject being taught. I also saw that when students use technology, if helps they learn more by seeing what they are learning.

The sixth video was Roosevelt Elementary's PBL Program. This video taught me that PBL teaches students to think on their on. It really helps students with public speaking. PBL gives students the chance to make their own decisions. PBL shows students how to work together annd come up with ideas.

CFT Summary for October

My first blog that I commented on was by Matt B Gomez called Classroom Terrarium. This was very intersting blog post about having a terrarium in the classroom. It lets you know how much the students enjoyed having one of these in the classroom. It gave the students a reason for wanting to learn and also taking care of the insects. He asked them to keep a journal and had them writing in it every week. This is a great way to get students invovle in the lesson.

My blog post was by Jabiz and was called Back From The Cutting Edge. This was a very good blog post about the use of technology. It gave yu the ideas that he had the children still use pens and paper and being old school. He let you know that he was trying to be a opened minded learner. It was a great blog post.

My next blog post was also by Jabiz and was called Building A Virbrant Reading Program. In this blo post he talked about having a better reading program. It really invovle the students more and helped them find better stories to read. It gave them feed back that made them want to read more. It also invovled the teachers in the readings more having being able to go over the books more.

We could take away a lot of new ideas from the interview with Mrs. Cassidy. I see that using a blog can really help with the students writing abilities. She really likes staying on top of the new technology.. Technology makes the world go around and it's here to stay. I saw that if you are helping your students to much you are not on top of the latest technology. She let me know that you should always explore new ideas and be open to learning something new.

I thought it was interesting that her 1st grade students were blogging like they were. This is something I would like to do in my class one day. I believe what Mrs. Cassidy said, this helps improve their writing skills. This will also get them happy because their work will be on the internet, and they will have someone to read thier work. They could have their parents comment or other parents and students to see what goes on in the classroom.

Dr Strange asked the question, "What Can Teachers and Students Teach Us About Project Based Learning?"

I think teachers and students can teach us more about project based learning. I also think that project based learning is very useful in a classroom. It gets the students invovled in the learning experience. Dr. Strange gave us a fsome resources to use.

The first article is called Seven Essentials for Project Based Learning . This article gives good ways you can really use to ensure project based learning in the classroom. Like what you need to know about project based learning. I think that when teachers do not have an begining event to announce a project, it may seem like it doesn't matter to the student. To get the students interested in a project you really need to make it seem fun and motivate them before they get started on the project.

The next video called Project-Based Learning for Teachers. This video tells what project-based learning does in the classroom and what ways it helps students. This video does a good job in giving you ways to use it and just how useful it can be. This video shows ways that is basic and easy to understand. These kinds of projects will be used in my classroom when I start teaching.

The next article I used was Project Based Learning in P.E. This is a good choice for students using project based learning in their high school P.E. class. This teacher really invovled his students in their learning experience. He had his students to create their own physical fitness programs, after that they got to share them with the middle school students. I really think that this is really involving the students, and they are learning but also sharing it with others.

The next video was What Motivates Students. This video was about students saying what their teacher did to help motivate them. The kids were honest in this video. This video really showed me that encouragement from the teacher can go a long way with the students. If the teacher is likes it, most likely the students are going to like it as well.

The last video I used is Two Students Solve the Case of the Watery Ketchup By Designing A New Cap . This video was very inspiring. These young men used project based learning to create an great new product that could be sold in stores. This video really shows that students can really help in teaching others about their research. Students can teach us more about project based learning, I think that they have to be motivated in what they are researching.

What Can We Learn About Teaching and Learning From Randy Pausch?
When I watched Randy Paucsh's video, it felt good to want to become a teacher .Randy is a man that is diagnosed with cancer and accepts that he has to live with this. Although, he has this life changing problem it does not prevent him from doing what he wants to do. In this video Randy talks about 3 main points his childhood dreams, helping others fulfill their own dreams, and how to achieve the dreams.

His dream was to work at the imagineering team at Disney, but ended up being a professor. He choose to be a teacher instead of following his dream and help students find there dreams. He even told a student he had a dreamed of working on Star Wars movies, which the student did achieve after graduating. It was interesting how much happiness he found in inspiring others to learn. The ways that he found to make learning the hard stuff enjoyable was great and made me relize how important teaching can be. This made me feel that I can teach and motivate my children to do great and wonderful things,I hope. It would be great if I could motivate my students to do great things.

Implications and Teaching Opportunities for Camera Use in Teaching and Learning

We were asked to do this post by Dr. Strange about the data from Zogby Analytics to use.

1. 87% say their smartphone never leaves their side.

2. 80% say the very first thing they do in the morning is reach for their smartphone.
3. 78% say they spend 2 or more hours per day using their smartphone.
4. 68% say they would prefer to use their smartphone instead of their laptop or personal computer for personal use.
5. 91% say that having a camera on their smartphone is important (61% very important)
6. 87% say they use their smartphone camera at least weekly. 59% use their smartphone camera at least every other day. 44% use their smartphone camera for still or motion picture taking every day.
Also, Dr. Strange gave us this information as well:

"Cameras were added to smartphones starting in 2002. The first iPhone also had a camera. It became available in June 2007. Seven years later there are over 1.75 billion smartphones worldwide. (Source: emarketing) This means that 24.1% of the entire world population (7.263 billion as of 3:32 CDT 9/27/2014 - Source: World Population Cloc) now has a smartphone. Your students will have lived all their life in a world with smartphones containing cameras."

Picture of Cell Phones
This data has made me understand that people are attached to their smartphones if they use them. These devices are used for everything like, social media, text, call, play games on, seach the web, and the list goes on. It also shows that most of the smartphones have cameras. When cellphones first came out they didn't have cameras on them in 2002.

Technology is a big part of the world that we live in today. With that being said, technology has to become useful in schools. Some schools use tablets and computers now on regular bases. I have heard that smartphones are used in classrooms in some schools. It would be a little different for younger children, but in middle and high school it could work good in my opinion. Most parents have smartphones in this day in age and they can keep up on what's going on in school through smartphones.

Smartphones can be used in schools to help cover the requirements for Alabama College and Career Ready Standards. They can be used to do alot of things like, reseach things on the internet. They also can help them by learning different languages because there are apps that can say a word in different languages. They will also be able to save more data when they go on field trips because they will always have a camera. This will help them be able to retain more information that they can go back to when they need to.

I think it's hard to say what my strengths and weaknesses are. My weaknesses are that I am very forgiving, meaning I try to help to much, I also feel that I can be a little bossy at times. I think that my strengths are having an open mind to things and also wanting to help other's out with problems. When I start being around children more I think I will be able to tell what strenghts and weaknesses I really have. I think going into classes will be very educational for me because I really don't know how to control a class of students at this time.

The How To Make A QR Code Video was different to me. I had never seen this before. Ms. Bennett's video instructions were very good and very easy to follow the instructions. This may help students learn better by being able to listen to their own voices.

The IPad Centers video taught me different ways to teach students how to read better. It was interesting how students were looking at themselves reading, and then correcting their mistakes. This is a good way to for children to better their reading skills.

The next video was Poplet as a Center. This video was very interesting because I have never heard of Poplet. It seems like a very useful tool that is easy to use. My step daughter uses this at her school.

The AVL As A Kindergarten Center video is about kindergarten classes using Alabama Virtual Library to help find information about things they are learning. I actually used this in college some. I did not know that Alabama Virtual Library would read to the students.

The video Mrs. Shirley's Discovery Education Board.. It was very interesting for me. This is something I never heard of before, and seems to be very easy to use. It looks like the information is easy to gain through the Discovery Education. The Moon Project was done great and the information was very informative about the Moon.

In the videos Mrs. Tassin's 2nd Grade Students Share Board Builder Project Part and Mrs. Tassin's 2nd Grade Students Share Board Builder Project Part 2, students learned how to do upload pictures and do research to the board. These projects in these videos were done very well. I did not know children knew this much about these things. I am in college now and I'm just finding out how to do this, look how far ahead of me they are.

The next video was Using iMovie and the Alabama Virtual Library in Kindergarten. It is so wonderful that kindergarten students can do the work to make iMovie Book Trailers. I'm just learning how to do that. The things the children are learning and being able to do is just incredible.

The video We All Become Learners has a message that is meant to say that everyone teaches someone something at some point in life. So by saying this we will always be learning, it will be a never ending process.

This was a lot of information, but I learned so much from the conversations between Dr. Strange and Anthony Capps. It was very nice to know how much knowledge Mr. Capp's 3rd grader's had. Their schooling has changed so much since I was in school. We did not use computers and other things. Teaching styles are very different from when i was in school. I wish I could have had some of those resources when I was in school. I never had technology in my classrooms, because that was not offered at the time. It is a great thing to be in schools today.

These videos made me learn that everyone is a learner, and also everyone is a teacher. This is right, I know I could learn a lot from Mr. Capps' 3rd graders. They would probaly teach me more then i already know at this point. Because, I don't know everything. I do think that a teacher needs to know how do certain things, like using GoogleDocs, making an iMovie, or how to upload videos to Youtube. I would try my best to guide my students if they were really stuck. I would question them to lead them to figure out how to solve their on problems. If they cannot figure it out after trying, I will Take extra time and give them more understanding. I want to make my class fun, but also push my students to do the best they can do.

CFK Summary for September

In Ashlee's blogAshlee and Lizara's Netball project they were talking about netball the sport. It was invented in 1895 and is like basketball. She listed where the first game was played. How the game was created and where it was created. But, she left me wondering how the game was actully played. Although, she said stay tuned to get a video later.

In Ashlee's blog Lifeguards Perspective it was about a boy going on his last swim of that day. It did't tell me that the life guard went to save the boy. It kind of told me how the boy went in the water and got hit so hard that he ended up on the sand.

Both were very interesting and I really enjoyed reading them.

What are PLNs you ask? Until now I never heard of them. But, they are very intersting ways to learn and help teachers and students. PLNs are personal learning networks that you create and use as a teacher or a student. After watching the video Michael Fawcett Discusses his PLN it really made me know how much this could help me. Its a network that can help me learn different ways to teach, while I'm also helping others with my teaching styles.

When I read Eva Buyuksimkesyan's My Wonderful PLN, it is important for teachers to have a PLNs. When you are a teacher it's always good to have other teacher's to communicate with. You will always want someone who you can relate to in your corner at some point in your teaching career. Personal learning networks can help a teacher to broaden their veiws on different subjects.

This has been very informative for me and I will use this information to make me a better teacher. I am starting my PLN and I hope to be as much of a help as some of these teacher's have been to me oneday.

Project #4 C4T Summary

In Mr Miguel Guhlin post Learning Together was very intersting. It really made me feel like work needs to been done with other's thoughts and opinions. I believe you can only do a certain amount of work on your own. If you are doing work for others to use, it needs to be done with more opinions and options. It really takes a community to make the world a better place.

Another post I read by Mr Guhlin was Stump the Tech Director. This was a very funny post about how the tech director only wants security instead of user friendly networks. It shows how some people have tunnel vision and only sees what they want to see. We as teacher will have to work together to make teaching easier. We also have to come up with ways and make sure other people can use those things.

1.Bing is useful for looking up or searching things. It brings up different websites to your search. It also suggest things to you to search. This search engine is very nice. But I'm use to goggle doing everything.

2.Webopedia is used to search the meaning of term. You put in your term, then it brings up how it is related to technology. It's great for people who don't know all of the computer terms. I would use this browser if I needed to know something about technology.

3. Gigablast This search engine tells you exactly why the search results are ranked the way they are so you can add more specific details if needed.

4. Ask. I have used Ask.com many times in the past. It is useful because you can pose a question and anyone can answer it. This means if you cannot find an answer to a question anywhere online, you can ask it here.

5.Yandex This search engine you can search any website from around the world. This would be better if you were searching about another country, like news stories in that country.

6. Clusty searches other search engines for you. When you search one thing it brings up information that is clustered into groups. You can pick which group you want. This is great because you can go right to what you are looking for without scrolling. I would recommend this search engine to everyone.

7.Wolframalpha This search engine was very useful. It uses human knowledge to solve equations. It would be best to use it to ask logical questions and anything to do with numbers and percentages.

8.Dogpile is almost like Google. You can use this search engine to search anything. It's set up so you can search the web, images, news,or videos.

What do we need to know about asking questions to be an effective teacher?

I feel that we, as teachers need to be able to ask better questions. From reading Three ways to ask better questions I learned that you should have prepared questions. You as a teacher should be prepared before class. Also, you should have questions to ask before and after class to make your kids engage in the learning while also seeing if that are getting the lesson plan you are teaching. There also is a preserved question, which is a question asked by a student that is a really good question. It can be brought up in other classes and help other students. That's a question worth keeping in your lesson plan.

I always thought when I asked a child a questions I wanted the best answer I could get. After watching Asking better question in the classroom I feel that there are better ways to ask the question so you can get a better response from your students. You can word the question so that you can get a thought about answer or a yes or no answer.

In doing this I realize that they are a lot of different ways to be an effective teacher. One there will always be ways to teach you to become a better teacher. You will have to take the time a learn the best way to be an effective teacher.

In the video What Is Peer Editing and the Peer Edit with Perfection Tutorial I learned a lot about helping comment on blog post. I never knew that it could be so many different ways to help someone with out telling just what they did wrong. I was surprised to hear that you should always compliment their work before you make ant suggestion. After that you can start the corrections if they are any to do. I learned some useful information from the video and the tutorial that will be able to help me be a better teacher.

In the video Writing Peer Review Top 10 Mistakes it was very funny. It was also very educational for me to see how other peers would react to corrections of their paper. I know they are kids in the video ,but some adults feel the same way. I'm glad I watched these videos and they will help me more in the long run as well as in this class.

Blog post 2

1) What is the central message of this video
2) How does the author make the case for this conclusion
3) Do you agree with his conclusion

I think the central message of this video was that you cant teach people to dance without them doing it. I think his point was to let people know that certain things cant be taught by just sitting in a class. In his conclusion it really didn't make any sense to me but I think he wanted people to think outside the box and do things on their on.

Teaching in the 21st century
1 Think outside the box
2 Let technology take its place
3 Get the kids to engage in learning

I believe Roberts is right in what he is doing. Teaching has change a lot over the years as well as technology. The way the world is set up these days we need better ways to keep the children active in wanting to learn. This will affect me in many different ways because I cant go by what I was taught in schools. I will have to learn new ways to teach and interact with the children of the world today.

In the video at the networked student it gave me a lot of insight on what I am getting into in this class. Connectivism is a new way to learn and help the student use some of the new technology's of the world. I really learned a lot by watching the video and I am eager to learn more. It is so much to do in this class that it is hard to keep up sometimes. The teacher is there for helping the student create this network of learning. The teacher is a guide so the student can succeed in the class and in life.

In the harness your student digital smarts video she lets the kids learn and teach on there on. She challenges the kids to learn and empower them to learn and teach the class. This is a very smart way to do things because she keeps them involved and wanting to learn more. I really enjoy things like this because these children are the future and w need them to be able to do these things.

In flipping the classroom I have never used this. I do think this is something that will help the children of the world in this day in age. If they miss days they can always go back and get the assignment and be able to get help with things they don't understand. It help the children get a head start on there education.

I feel that the bringing the locker room into the classroom was a very good way to teach at times. I feel that if the information is given and they know what they need to do it can be helpful. I do not feel that it should be used in all classes because some information could be false and not something the student should be studying.

1. What are the things (if any) you have heard about EDM310?
2. What fears (if any) do you have about EDM310?
3. Compare and contrast EDM310 with other courses you have taken in college or high school.
4. What do you think will be the most difficult thing for you in EDM310?
5. What is the best way for you to address this “most difficult” aspect of EDM310?

I myself haven't heard much about the class to be honest, I'm just getting to South Alabama and it was on my schedule to take. I have heard a few things since I have started the course and I believe that the course will be a little challenging. The fears that I have in this class would be that I can't keep up with everything. Although I'm going to do my best to do the work, some of it seems difficult at times, because I'm not use to the computer in that way. Edm310 is a course that is very different from what I am use too, because I haven't had a course that was this involved with computers. This course is completely on the computer, its a "green" course. I personally have never had a course that was totally "green".

The most difficult thing in this course would be learning to work solely with the computer. I know the basic functions of a computer, and know how to do some stuff with the computer. Although, I do take instruction well some stuff is a little more difficult to understand. But, I will use the lab to help me in anyway I need to be helped. That is one thing about me, I'm not scared to ask for help.

Practice blog

I. Who am I
II. Why do I want to become an educator
III. What does an educator do in their practice
IV. What are my passions

I am a 29 year old man with one child. I have a little boy that is nine years old that stays out of state. I was in the navy for four years, and I received my associate's degree from Bishop State. I would like to become an educator because I feel I can help mood young minds in a good way. I like to be able to help kids on the right path in life. Educator's help kids learn and teach them how to educate their selves. I have a lot of passions, one is to help motivate children to be better people in life, another is to ride motorcycles.

I have lived in Mobile Al most of my life. There was a period when I was in the military that I lived in Jacksonville Fl, and Seattle Wa. I came into the field of education because I was finding myself and evaluating my life and I came up with the idea to teach. I thought that was where I could do something that impacted the whole a little by molding young minds. In todays school I feel that teaching is being done with more technology. Some of the same points are being used just different ways of teaching them. I would love to one day become a school consular but that is a future plan. My passion of riding motorcycle is a little crazy I love speed for some reason. I ride a Hayabusa motorcycle which is a sport bike, it relaxes me while also going me a rush.

Welcome
